Rome in April

It's worth going on excursions to Rome in April: warm and sunny

Rome in April 2026 – is it worth going on vacation? Weather and reviews, air temperature, how to dress, the number of tourists, prices in hotels and on excursions. What to do and see in Rome in April, holidays and interesting events, where to go in Italy – tells Eurotraveler.

If you are going to visit any European country on an excursion, rather than a business visit, then April is probably the best time for this. It is no longer cold, but it is also not hot, usually quite clear and not abundant in rain.

In addition, prices in hotels and restaurants have not yet reached their peaks in the central month of spring. And there aren’t that many tourists either.

But what about Easter and the corresponding holidays, you may ask? When does every European literally consider it his duty to leave his native home for a trip?

Yes, we must admit that some major European cities look crowded during this period. But if you have the opportunity to make a trip outside of peak dates (in 2026, Catholic Easter falls on April 5), then we assure you that you will not have to complain about huge crowds and the literal impossibility of privacy.

Again, for some, the abundance of tourists is not a critical factor at all. And it’s easy to make sure of this – it’s enough to come to Rome in April and visit St. Peter’s Square on Sunday.

However, in our article we will look at ordinary weekdays.

When demand does not outstrip supply. And you will be able to implement the planned sightseeing program without regard to external circumstances.

And we will start traditionally, with what

Weather in Rome in April

In short, it deserves many words of praise. And even individual stories – anyone who has been to Rome in April, when all the nature around is blooming and reaching for the sun and summer, of course, will come here again at the same time.

To get a taste of life again and to look younger. At least with my soul, if not with my body…

It happens that at the very beginning of April, the air temperatures in Rome reach the level of 20 °C. And they even step over it: easily and confidently!

Although careful travelers should still expect a maximum of 16-18 °C. Moreover, these temperatures are enough to keep you warm during long city tours.

Believe me, you don’t want to leave the streets even after dark!

The length of the day, by the way, ranges from 12 hours and 40 minutes to 14 hours. Accordingly, the sun goes to sleep in the interval 19.35-20.05…

Some years in April, the weather in Rome swings for a very long time. As a result, up to the middle of the month and even on the 20th, outdoor thermometers show a maximum of 17-18 °C during the day. Cold snaps of up to 10-14 degrees Celsius are also possible – however, they last no longer than a couple of days.

Nights in Rome are cool even in the middle of April – no higher than 10-12 °C.

Towards the end of the month, the sun begins to smile more often. And finally, it stops saving energy – on the threshold of May in the “Eternal City”, air temperatures reach 20-24 °C.

On some days it can be warmer. So much so that you are surprised to find that summer has arrived in the Italian capital far ahead of schedule.

Rains

The amount of precipitation is low – up to 30-40 mm per month. The probability of a powerful spring downpour is simply negligible – usually 2-3 light rains occur in Rome during the whole of April.

Which seem to be designed to clean up the Italian capital a bit after the winter. But they have no intention of seriously disrupting the sightseeing plans of tourists visiting the city.

The probability of a clear day ranges from 60-70%. Which, translated into human language, means that in the middle of spring Rome will appear before you all bathed in sunlight.

And literally enveloped in the aromas of a burgeoning nature.

How to Dress

It is unlikely that you should put winter or even frankly warm clothes in your suitcase. An ordinary spring jacket should be enough for all occasions. Just in case, it was duplicated with a cardigan and a hoodie.

You can bring an elegant raincoat, a stylish light coat, or a fashionable jacket. Having equipped yourself in this way, you are unlikely to stand out – the residents of Rome themselves dress like this in April.

In April in Rome you can wear summer clothes

But shoes should be taken special care of. As the “Eternal City” is known to stand on 7 hills. And it is better to make long trips along it in comfortable sneakers and moccasins, boots.

And there is no doubt that these movements will take a long time – the Roman spring has been stirring the minds of mankind for centuries. You want to walk a lot here and sit on the stones, steps and walls for a long time.

Trying to grab my piece of quiet happiness. Who, it turns out, doesn’t even think much about hiding!

And we’re not the only ones who think that way. Read almost any review from a person who visited the Italian capital at that time.

Prices in 2026

If you work hard and book no later than February, then for April dates you will find good and not ruinously expensive options in Rome. Priced from €150 per night (taxes may not be taken into account) and – of course – not in the very center of the city.

But then, it’s a blessing, not far from the Vatican. And that very cherished square (St. Peter’s), which we wrote about at the very beginning of our review!

In this area, we primarily look to see if there are places in the Ecclesia Domus Vatican In, a guest house that is located near the wall surrounding the “Papal City”. There is also a metro station nearby (Cipro, orange line), which solves all the traveler’s transport problems at once.

If you don’t see anything wrong with staying away from the city center, then here’s another great option – Una Chicca a Roma. A B&B hotel that is located not even on the outskirts, but outside Rome.

However, it is a 20-minute train ride from Tiburtina Station. And yes, in April, accommodation for two people with breakfast will cost ~ €130 per day.

Here is a map of the Rome metro and fares.

Guided tours of the city and its individual attractions are generally not very expensive. For example, you will pay about €50-55 (entrance fees included) to visit the Colosseum and the Roman Forum in company with a guide.

A 3-hour tour of the Vatican Museums, combined with a visit to St. Peter’s Cathedral, will take place if you do not regret ~ €40.

What to Do

In the middle of spring, both nature and people bloom. And nature does this violently and unrestrainedly, charging everything around with their energy, the latter try to channel this power into a slightly more creative channel.

Designing gardens, organizing various events and celebrations. Which, of course, give the season and place a distinct originality.

Rome did not escape this in April either. And how could the “Eternal City” stay away from such a creative process?

So, having arrived here in the middle of spring, a traveler can become a participant in non-ordinary events. The main one, apparently, is

Holidays

Dedicated to Rome’s birthday, April 21, 753 BC Obviously, it would be fundamentally wrong to “pass by” and not celebrate such an impressive event.

After all, Natale di Roma is one of the most fun and colorful events in the Italian capital. Parades and processions are held everywhere on this day, and many of the city’s museums are free to enter.

The opening of the Roman Rose Garden, Roseto Comunale, is also timed to coincide with Rome’s birthday. Admission is again free, inside you can see more than 1,000 varieties of this amazing, in the full sense of the word, royal flower.

The Rose Garden is open daily until the beginning of June. So if you are going to go to Rome in May, you can also enjoy the sight of blooming “meadows”.

At the end of April, the most tourist staircase of the city, the Spanish Steps, begins to be decorated with blooming azaleas. The tradition dates back to the 18th century, and today it has already become a real event that numerous tourists come to see.

It is also worth remembering that on April 25, the whole of Italy celebrates Liberation Day or Festa della Liberazione to mark the end of the Nazi occupation and, in principle, the fascist regime. On this day, the victims of the resistance are remembered, and a memorial parade is held from the Colosseum to the Porta San Paolo gates.

What to See

Who would doubt that it is the sights that are the real purpose of a visit to Rome in April for any traveler who is eager for true man-made beauty. Because, in principle, he will be able to afford to wander through the ruins and sit for a long time on the foundation of some ancient wall without being disturbed by anyone.

Of course, you have the right to make a plan for exploring the “Eternal City” yourself, taking into account your own needs and experience. But just in case, we will list the places that make up the glory of the ancient city.

It seems quite natural to want to start a visit to the Italian capital with its Forum. And, perhaps, with an excursion to visit the Colosseum – if you have not previously seen the ancient amphitheater from the inside.

В середине весны стоит посетить Колизей - пока туристов немного

Then we strongly advise you to look closely at the ruins of the palace of Emperor Augustus on Palatine Hill – in April they will only open to visitors after the winter break. And then go inside what remains of the “Golden House” of Nero.

And to consolidate this visual course of acquaintance with the architecture of Ancient Rome with the beautifully preserved Trajan’s column and Caesar’s Forum.

Well, maybe even a visit to the Pantheon. A magnificent pagan temple, which did not lose its religious function with the advent of Christianity.

Churches

You should definitely spend a day or two with Roman churches. Moreover, this is in addition to St. Peter’s Cathedral, the main and largest Catholic church in the world.

You definitely need to pay a visit to the amazingly beautiful Santa Maria in Araceli on Capitol Hill. As well as Sant’Agnese in Agone in Piazza Navone, designed by one of the architectural geniuses of the Baroque era, Francesco Borromini.

A couple of the prettiest churches are also sheltered by the largest square in the Italian capital, Piazza del Popolo.

It is necessary to throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain in order to return to Rome at least 1 more time. And admire the suburban villa of the Dukes of d’Este stands in Tivoli to experience the delight of such an organic fusion of nature and the creation of human hands.

Where to Go

It is unwise to neglect the opportunity to travel somewhere from Rome in April. Until Italy was once again overwhelmed by sheer crowds of tourists.

In a certain proximity to the capital city, we recommend visiting the papal summer residence Castel Gandolfo. And (or) soak up the sea air on the coast in Lido di Ostia.

Active tourists are sure to get to Vitterbo or Orvieto. Or even to both of these charming, original towns near the Italian capital.

Fans of railway travel may decide to take a train from Rome to Florence. After all, just a couple of hours of time and you will be able to see the masterpieces of the Uffizi Gallery and the Palatine Pitti Gallery.

Well, for those who are able to stay in Italy for a few more days, we advise you to go to Venice. Which is connected to Rome by high-speed trains, and – like Florence – can become a real “cherry” on the cake of your spring trip!
