When is the Best Time to Go to Rome

Vittorio Emanuele Monument: May is the best month to visit Rome

When is the best time to go to Rome for a vacation? The weather by month, the temperature of the air and water, how to dress, is it possible to swim, the number of tourists, prices in hotels and on excursions? Eurotraveler found out what to do, what to see and where to go in Rome in spring and summer, autumn and winter, what to visit near the “Eternal City” and in Italy in general.

The answer to the question posed in the title may not be as simple as it seems at first glance. Ambiguous, anyway.

Since a young and energetic person who loves movement, indifferent to the heat, as well as the hustle and noise, will undoubtedly say that the best time to travel to Rome is from May to September. On the contrary, a family member who has learned from bitter experience will say that he prefers to go to the “Eternal City” in early spring or late autumn.

And he will also be right in his own way. Even though, for example, November is the rainiest month in Rome. And that’s why it doesn’t seem to be very suitable for a tourist trip. And the local March seems to be cold in theory… Or not?

We decided not to jump to conclusions. Instead, we conducted a diligent study of what not only spring and summer are like in the Italian capital, but also autumn and winter.

Both in terms of weather and tourist flows? As well as prices – it’s no secret that rooms in Roman hotels and apartments are expensive even out of season! And in the summer they even update the records!

Spring

From our point of view, this is a particularly optimistic time. Therefore, it is best suited for a trip and vacation in Rome. Will it be short or long!

Judge for yourself!

March starts cautiously here. But the air temperature can reach 12-16 degrees Celsius even at the beginning of the month during the day. Hinting to everyone that spring has come not only in the calendar, but also in reality!

In the middle of the month, you can expect warming to 18 °C, and on the threshold of April, sometimes it can be more than +20 °C. It is much colder at night: usually 7-10 °C.

But so what – during the day you will be able to realize an exceptionally rich excursion program. Moreover, you will have very few competitors!

And the rains can make it difficult to travel to Rome in March for a very small number of days – 3-4 times a month. The average monthly rainfall rarely exceeds 40-50 mm, so no water flows for you. So, light precipitation, which can be easily handled by an umbrella and sneakers with thick soles.

Foliage is bursting into bloom, cherries are blooming, and bright spots of floral bosquettes are everywhere.

How the Roman inhabitants themselves dress in March, as well as (not too numerous!) Tourists? Yes, about the same as in the local winter – in light jackets and elegant scarves.

No hats on her head, and comfortable boots on her feet. Suitable for a long walk, even on cobblestones, even on asphalt!

Some years, March in Rome may not be very warm, and the month starts with slightly lower temperatures than usual. So until about the middle of the month, thermometers try to show no more than 12-13 °C even during the day. And especially at night… It may even freeze in the suburbs.

But after a week or two in March, the weather in Rome comes to its senses. And starting from the middle of the month, it gives the townspeople and visitors the usual warmth.

Prices in early spring practically do not deviate from winter lows. And if you expect to find apartments for €120-140 per day not near the center, but also not on the “settlements”, then you can do it!

April and May

It is noticeably warmer and therefore much more touristic. Which, of course, should not be surprising, bearing in mind the Catholic Easter, which is usually celebrated on one of the April dates. And Rome’s birthday, which always falls on April 21st.

As for the weather, in early April in Rome, warm -air temperatures are in the range of 16-18 °C. And by the middle of the month, you have every right to count on 20-24 °C.

In April, it's worth going to Rome to celebrate Easter and celebrate the city's birthday.

It rains less frequently compared to March, and the probability of a sunny day usually exceeds 60-65%. Tourists are also being added. And by the Easter holidays (Easter is celebrated on April 20 in 2026), the city is getting crowded with visitors.

There are especially many of them near St. Peter’s Square and the cathedral, from the balcony of which the Pope will bless the entire Catholic world. But the Vatican Museums, as well as other interesting places in Rome, were by no means empty during this period.

Further – more – in late spring, the local air temperature prefers a range of 25-30 degrees Celsius. And if it gets cooler in Rome at the beginning of May, then starting from the second decade, the thermometers have been creeping up without ceasing.

At night, by the way, it is very cool – from 10-12 °C at the beginning of the month to 15-18 °C in the middle and end of the month. So if you intend to walk around the “Eternal City” after sunset at the end of spring – and this is a very romantic activity – take at least a light blouse with you.

It’s no secret that May is considered one of the best months to travel to Rome. But obviously not the cheapest – prices in hotels and apartments just don’t reach the highest possible threshold.

Summer

It is traditionally considered the highest and therefore the most “hot” tourist season in Rome. The period of vacations and school holidays – how can you not take advantage of the chance to visit Italy? And, of course, carefully consider its capital?!

And if it’s easy to agree with such an assessment in the case of the whole country – who wouldn’t want to relax in Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea or the Adriatic Sea – then we have reasonable doubts about the “Eternal City”.

In fact, if the weather in Rome is still relatively in control in June, and the air temperature only occasionally rises to 35 ° C, then in July and August the real heat begins. Mostly cloudless days come in succession, which, coupled with very rare rains and high temperatures, can completely spoil the impression of the trip.

After all, instead of exploring the Colosseum with interest or marveling at the size of the Pantheon, you will only be busy looking for coolness. And the crowds around the Trevi Fountain and other Roman reservoirs will reach such a size that fears of being trampled no longer seem groundless.

The Trevi Fountain is beautiful in any season

Yes, you heard right, despite the promise of wild heat, the Italian capital sees an incredible number of visitors in summer. Who either didn’t give a damn about temperatures below +40 °C. Either they no longer believe any predictions of weather forecasters.

July and especially August are the hottest months in Rome. Naturally, many of the capital’s residents during these periods try to get out of the city or even go to the sea.

Of course, prices also adjust to demand, which is usually high.. And you can’t expect a significant discount even in expensive Roman hotels at this time of the year. What can we say about cheap ones that are in overwhelming demand?!

Autumn

But this is a golden time! It’s still quite hot, but still allows you to breathe.

Even in early September, the weather in Rome already allows you to breathe normally and take your time to explore the sights. You can easily take long walks, just trying not to be in the sun at noon.

In most cases, for example, the air temperature ranges from 26-30 °C during the day throughout the month. And at night, it carefully allows tourists to catch their breath, dropping into the range of 20-25 °C.

It doesn’t always happen that way. And quite often, right in the middle of September, Rome experiences wild heat at 35 °C. But in the evenings and nights, the atmosphere cools down anyway. Enough so that you can build up your strength for the next day full of interesting excursions.

It rains more often in September in the “Eternal City” than in summer. That’s why you can see complaints about excessive humidity and stuffiness in the reviews.

In general, the beginning of autumn in Rome is a dry and clear period. And if you stock up on wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeve shirts, and sunscreen, then praise yourself for your foresight.

Moreover, as in the summer, you can still go to the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. And swim in the bustling and lively Ostia. Either spend a couple of days in Anzio or Nettuno.

Terracina? This is only if you earn well and can afford it!

October

The middle of autumn in Rome is also a great time to explore the city. Visits to literally all of its nooks and crannies and trips to the surrounding area.

Depending on the year, the air temperature in October is in the range of 20-24 °C, but it can rise higher, to +26-28 °C. Dips to the level of +16-18 °C are inevitable, but usually do not last more than 5-7 days, even in the second half of the month.

That will allow you to constantly walk around in summer sundresses, T-shirts, tops and shorts. But, of course, do not forget that when visiting churches and the Vatican, you need to dress more strictly.

In the evenings, you will probably have to put something warmer than a weightless jacket on your shoulders. Because it’s cool in Rome after sunset in October, maybe only 12-14 °C!

It doesn’t rain much, as if nature is saving up its strength for November. The most stormy and rainy month in Rome!

November

However, this does not prevent us from recognizing November as one of the most promising from the traveler’s point of view. Because the rains in Rome are often torrential, that is, salvo-like. And they don’t try to ruin several days in a row at once.

And their average rate is not so high as to completely abandon the trip. Once you find out how pleasant the prices in Roman hotels become, the thought settles in your head – and without fail.

Because the sun is shining properly in Rome in November. For most of the month, heating the urban atmosphere to 15-18 °C. That is, making it clear to everyone that in these latitudes they don’t really believe in winter.

In general, stock up on a raincoat and rubber shoes (boots with thick soles will save you). In case of serious bad weather, plan B – for a day from Rome, for example, you can go to see Florence.

Not entirely, of course, it’s impossible in a day. But you will get a general idea of the beautiful capital of Tuscany.

Castel Sant'Angelo - autumn is a good time to travel to Italy

And after making such preparations, go on a trip to late autumn Italy – we assure you, you will not regret it!

Winter

The lowest season in Rome. This should not confuse a thoughtful citizen who has the opportunity to travel to the “Eternal City” at this time.

Since, as a reward for an unconventional way of looking at things, he will sometimes receive very good (because mostly dry) weather, a very small number of competitors in the fight for tickets to museums and tables in good restaurants, plus the lowest possible prices. Isn’t that a little thing, especially in these days?!

As for the weather, for example, in December it is cold in Rome, but not frosty – the city lives under the sign of temperatures in the range of 10-14 ° C during the day. And he no longer complains about the dank dampness.

It rains moderately – no more than 4-5 days per month. This means that you will be able to plan and implement a rich program of events.

Closer to Christmas and New Year, prices are, of course, rising. But starting from January 7-8, they are lowered again. And they don’t stay at a particularly high level until the end of winter.

January is the coldest month of the year in Rome. And the average daytime temperature is about 10-11 degrees Celsius.

In February, even with the naked eye, you can notice a turn towards spring. For although the atmosphere usually warms up to a maximum of 13-15 °C during the day, increases to 18-20 °C are sometimes recorded.
