Rome in December 2026 – is it worth going? Weather and reviews, air temperature, how to dress, prices in hotels and on excursions. What to see in Rome at the beginning of December, at Christmas and before the New Year, where to go in Italy – tells Eurotraveler.
Rome is good at any time of the year! Recently, however, such a statement should be subjected to a thorough revision.
In fact, who would like to stay in the “Eternal City” in July or August?
Only convinced masochists. Or a small category of tourists, hardened so much that temperatures of the order and even above 40 degrees Celsius against the background of high humidity does not leave any trace on their “armor”.
Everyone else has to put up with it because they can’t get out at other times or don’t want to. That’s why they try not to pay attention to the weather, which is quite unsuitable for “soulful” walks around Rome.
As well as the incredible crowds of tourists, the ban on bathing in fountains and other restrictions from the municipal authorities…
There is a way out (and a simple one!), however! And this is not a switch to night-time wakefulness.
You just need to go to Rome in December or choose a similar low-season month. And enjoy the streets of the Italian capital, if not alone, then relatively sparsely populated. Admiring silence, tranquility and clarity, bright and pure colors…
Winter here is like a revelation. It allows you to feel and understand things that don’t even occur to you, for example, in the hectic and stuffy June. Or which month is considered the best for visiting Rome?
Weather in Rome in December
Allows you to do a lot! It is getting noticeably sunnier in the Italian capital compared to November. The amount of precipitation is also decreasing proportionally – up to 30-40 mm per month.
Daytime air temperatures in Rome in early December range from 10-14 ° C (sometimes 17 degrees Celsius). But closer to Christmas, the local atmosphere is not inclined to warm up above 8-12 °C by noon.

It’s cool at night! And the air temperature, which is set after sunset (2-10 ° C), makes you take a closer look at choosing clothes.
However, in the reviews about the trip at this time of the year, you still won’t find regret – after all, all attention is focused on the surrounding beauty!
One way or another, but wearing only a light windbreaker in December Rome, you will quickly freeze. And in a down jacket, on the contrary, you will overheat and sweat.
So you should equip yourself in the Southern European style: throw on a weightless, but not draughty (and, just in case, waterproof) jacket, tie a bright scarf to cheer up. Put on sneakers or worn-out – comfortable – demi-season boots.
And then you will definitely be able to take long walks through the streets. You will be able to see all the most interesting things in Rome, do not miss any of the main attractions.
Sometimes you just don’t have enough health to pay such attention to the local summer weather!
Italians don’t like to wear hats – they take care of their hair – but this practical wardrobe item won’t hurt freezing tourists. Especially if they are going to wander the streets in the evenings, observing architectural antiquities by the light of modern lanterns.
Frosts
They happen extremely rarely in Rome and are not able to seriously affect the planned events. Since the air will still warm up to at least 10 °C during the day!
Heavy snowfall is also a very rare occurrence. But snowflakes that barely reach the asphalt and immediately melt occasionally try to spoil the mood of the Romans.

Remember that you can come to Italy by car and not “shod” in winter tires – this is not mandatory in principle. This fact eloquently testifies to the climatic features of the country!
P.S. Although, for our part, we advise tourists to think about seasonal car re-fitting seriously. After all, they will almost certainly have to go through the Alpine passes. And there’s enough snow and ice on them in winter!
2026 Prices
As for hotels, we will primarily recommend inexpensive ones (starting from €90 per night) guest house Una Chicca a Roma. It seems to be located outside the city. But it’s actually so convenient that you’ll spend very little time traveling to and from Rome.
Not good, do you need to be closer to the center? Then catch an option near Termini train Station and a 15-minute walk from the Colosseum – Domus Ferruccio.
Slightly more expensive than the previous one, but still setting quite reasonable prices. Especially considering the convenience of its location from all points of view (the entrance to Rome’s Vittorio Emanuele metro station on the orange line is nearby).
Excursions with English-speaking guides can generally be called inexpensive – for €30-35 you will be immersed in the magic of Rome for three hours on a walking tour with up to 10 people (in winter there will obviously not be so many tourists). If you want something more traditional, for example, to wander in the company of a guide around the Vatican, then you need to cook from €70-75.
What to Do
The abundance of opportunities in Rome, even in December, is amazing. Just as surprising is the very small number of tourists.
How can you miss such a brilliant opportunity to be close to eternal beauty without being squeezed by anyone?!
Due to the relatively low probability of rain and the predicted abundance of sun, it is possible to plan a particularly active pastime. It includes not only exploring the most interesting places in Rome, but also trips beyond its borders.
In the first case, we advise you not to forget about the Cordonata, Michelangelo’s Staircase, which leads to Capitoline Hill. Indeed, from its steps, watching the sunsets over the “Eternal City” turns into a real event, a milestone in life.
At the top of the Capitoline Hill stands the Basilica of Santa Maria in Araceli, one of the most beautiful in Rome. There won’t be many tourists inside in December, and you’ll be able to take a closer look at its stunning interior.
Beautiful sunset views can also be enjoyed from the top of the Spanish Steps, one of Rome’s most famous landmarks.
It is almost guaranteed that you will be impressed if you decide to watch the sunset from Pincho Hill. Before that, we took a walk through the Villa Borghese park, which was almost deserted at that time.

As for country walks, even in winter you can visit the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo. Although, of course, to make the right impression, it is better to see this place near Rome in May. Well, or in early or mid-autumn.
They literally ask themselves to visit the wonderful ancient towns of Viterbo or Orvieto. Why, you can always treat yourself to short trips outside the Lazio region!
Where to? Yes, there are plenty of options.
For example, an express train gets from Rome to Florence in 1.5 hours. And the Red Arrow will spend only ten hours on the road, rushing from the Italian capital to Naples!
As for the length of the trip from Rome to Venice, she suggests that you will have to stay at least overnight in the “City of Canals”. But you won’t mind – “La Serenissima” is the place that you can’t get tired of?!
Even in winter, the weather in Venice does not look too suitable for excursions…
Reviews
Those few tourists who took the risk and visited Rome on New Year’s Eve have little reason to complain. After all, the weather at this time, if not ideal for walks and trips, is close to it.
Slushy days, which can completely ruin a trip, happen infrequently, and there is a lot of sunlight, on the contrary.
The main thing that is especially memorable is the small number of tourists. The previously ubiquitous Chinese tour groups are no longer streaming. And sometimes you can feel lonely on the embankments of the Tiber.
A separate compliment is the prices. Apart from a short period at the very end of December, they are distinguished by commendable modesty. And they won’t make a hole even in a modest vacation budget.
