Is It Worth Visiting Venice in May

Grand Canal - is it worth going to Venice in May?

Venice in May 2026 – is it worth going? Weather and reviews, air temperature, how to dress, whether there are many tourists, prices in hotels and on excursions. What to see in Venice in early May and later, in late spring, where to go in Veneto and Italy? As well as practical tips to save money on vaporetto rides, visits to museums and palaces – in the Eurotraveler material.

If Paris in early May is considered to be the “right” destination for a romantic trip, then Venice is not so simple. Although, in theory, the “City of Canals”, mysteriously lost in the mists, looks like a tempting target in the epilogue of spring, the worm of doubt still torments the soul of well-read and cautious gentlemen.

Still: the sea, the lagoon, a lot of water. And because of that, what about precipitation? Isn’t May coming to Venice on the wings of not only warmth, but also rain?

And won’t you have to fork out for disposable plastic boots on a regular basis? And then wander knee-deep in the water, looking at the palazzo under the tight jets of a brisk spring rain?

Many people are interested in the answer to this question. And it is no coincidence that a considerable number of grandiosely conceived and much-promised trips to La Serenissima were spoiled by its fickle, capricious climate.

Let’s not be strict – sometimes it’s even nice to get caught in the rain. But what if it goes on for days on end? And the channels are literally pushing their contents not even on the sidewalks, but on the premises of the first floors?

Now we will tell you everything in detail! To calm down, I note that at the end of spring in the “City on the Water” everything is far from pessimistic.

Weather in Venice in May

Alas, we definitely cannot reassure travelers – the sunset of spring is a warm but wet period here. According to long-term statistics, the beginning of May in Venice surpasses most other periods of the year in terms of precipitation.

Definitely second only to the clear champion, November!

However, this is not a verdict. The May weather in Venice is considered capricious because it is not inclined to take into account the feelings and even more so the expectations of tourists. Who, of course, would like to wander as part of a walking tour of the city in clear weather.

Are you waiting for the rain? And here you have the sun and cloudless sky! Is it going to be dry by all indications? This is an extra reason to stock up on a raincoat and rubber boots.

It doesn’t happen year after year, and here’s the proof – at one time we wrote about the weather in Venice in November. Which was amazingly dry and warm for several days in a row.

And only then, as if apologizing for optimism, it was raining (a little!).

In May the weather in Venice is warm, and there are many tourists

Again, the air temperature in Venice in early May will not give rise to complaints.

From 17-20 degrees Celsius, street thermometers usually show on Labor Day and subsequent dates. And the atmosphere warms up to 24-28 °C towards the end of the month and spring in general.

Isn’t it the subtropics?

Failures happen, but what about them? Besides, it usually doesn’t happen below 15 °C, except in the dead of night.

Moreover, at the end of May, the water temperature in Venice allows you to swim: the sea in the lagoon warms up to 20-21 °C. Moreover, swimming is not even in theory – there is a place.

After all, the reverse side of the island of Lido, the one that “looks into the face” of the Adriatic Sea, has wide sandy beaches!

What to Take with You

Anyway, raincoats and umbrellas will definitely come in handy in Venice throughout May (perhaps). Moreover, it is especially good if each member of the traveling company has a personal copy of at least an umbrella.

We will not persuade you to stock up on rubber boots. After all, not everyone will risk going to Venice by car and loading a suitcase of things into the trunk for everyone.

But note that even plastic, that is, actually disposable, boots, a distant relative of medical shoe covers, in the “City of Canals” cost €12-15 per pair.

In addition to these items, be sure to bring an extra hoodie, sweater, and wool socks. Because it can be cool in local hotels in late spring due to the pervasive dampness.

Well, if you have views of some seaside resorts in Italy in May, for example, the nearby Lido di Jesolo, bring bathing accessories with you. And some other items that will be useful when relaxing at sea.

Prices 2026

Those who decide to organize a trip on their own should focus on the following expenses.

San Giorgio Maggiore - the air temperature in Venice reaches 28 degrees Celsius in May, but sunny days are rare

Find a room for two in a hotel in Cannaregio, adjacent to Santa Lucia Train Station, in early May for €150+ per night (for two people).

That’s how much overnight stays at Hotel San Geremia cost. Well, a very good hotel, located on the square, and not on the canal – that is, in a much drier place.

Tourists also love the San Polo area on the other side of the Grand Canal from the station. He reciprocates them, but also asks for a noticeably more for the night.

It’s difficult to recommend something inexpensive but decent there, but we’ll try…  Clean, bright and spacious rooms can be rented at La Dogaressa Guest House, which is just a 3-4-minute walk from the famous Rialto Bridge. Accordingly, you can easily reach St. Mark’s Square.

To complete the picture, here is a link to the Hotel Delle Rose in Mestre. Rooms in which are, of course, cheaper – from €115 per night. At the same time, you can get to Venice by tram in a maximum of 15 minutes!

Guided city tours will cost very different amounts – it all depends on the program (and the greed of the organizers). In general, you can expect to take part in a sightseeing walking tour of the city center for a fee of about €30-35.

You will need to pay about €35 for an organized trip to the islands of Murano and Burano, during which you will have to tell and show everything. A half-hour gondola ride costs from €45-50.

It’s Worth Remembering

That Venice is undergoing an experiment in charging entry fees for day tourists. And on certain dates (so far, 60 days per year, from April to July), the traveler must pay € 5 for the right to walk around the city without staying in its hotels.

In May 2026, all Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in May will be paid. As well as the entire period from May 29 to June 7.

What to Do

We wrote about possible walking routes through the “City of Canals” in a separate article. And we even developed convenient routes that will allow you to plan your day in the most logical way – what to see in Venice in 3-4 days?

We will also give you some tips that will help you save a certain amount of euros. You won’t have to walk everywhere and deny yourself a slice of pizza – don’t worry)))

The cost of a one-time vaporetto ride in 2026 has crossed the reasonable line – €9.5 seems like an excessively high price to pay for such a pleasure. But buying a travel card for 1, 3, 7 days allows you to save a significant amount of money.

Palazzo Ducale and Basilica San Marco - what is due to see in Venice in May?

For citizens aged 6-29 years, you can get an even bigger discount. You just need to ask the ticket office at the pier to issue a paper called Rolling Venice (you only need a passport or ID card).

The city’s tourist card, the Venezia Unica City Pass, will give you the opportunity to visit some museums (read more here – veneziaunica.it/en) and temples. But you should know that entrance to many churches in Venice is already free.

For example, the central Basilica of San Marco and the church of San Giorgio Maggiore do not charge entrance fees.

In the first one, you will only need to pay for climbing to the next level. And in Palladio’s creation, which decorates a separate island in the lagoon, the fee is charged only for climbing the bell tower. On the elevator, by the way!

The famous Frari in the area of San Polo and Il Redentore in Giudecca, however, tourists will be allowed only for a fee of €3!

The Venetian Doge’s Palace does not advertise a discount on its website. But in fact, it allows families with at least 1 child to pay for admission at children’s rates (€13 instead of 20).

By the way, receipts provide an opportunity to explore not only the famous palazzo, but also to visit the Carrera Museum. He lives in the building of the former royal palace, rebuilt, by the way, by Napoleon.

In the middle of the 19th century, the notorious Sissi, Empress of Austria, looked out of the windows of the palace, which has now become a museum.

Where to Go

The uncertain May weather is no reason to stay too long in Venice. Because there are a lot of cities around it that you need to visit on a “mandatory” basis.

At least it is worth visiting Verona in 1 day. And during the walk, you realize that this city deserves a much longer visit.

Moreover, it is easy and quick to get to Lake Garda. An incredibly picturesque pond at the finish of spring!

We recommend you to visit Vicenza, a very beautiful city in the Veneto region, not spoiled by the attention of foreign travelers. And take an excursion to Treviso, located very close to Venice.

At least in order to understand why the guidebooks unanimously call it a smaller copy of the “Lightest”?!
