Rome in February 2026 – is it worth going on vacation? Weather and reviews, air temperature, how to dress, prices in hotels and on excursions. What to see in Rome at the beginning of February and at the end of winter, where to go (!) and what you can do, Eurotraveler tells.
February is just the last month of winter. Associated with snowdrifts taller than a man and frosts that make it difficult to even breathe.
At the same time, it is also a month that gives much more sun than January. And with it, the hope that there is very little left to endure – and life will start to boil again.
Well, somewhere February is not cold at all. And not only that, he meets spring.
Surprisingly, these places are not in the tropics, but in Europe.
Don’t you believe it? In vain – in Rome in February it is very warm and sunny, the grass is turning green and the trees are slowly beginning to bloom.
There are
Very Few Tourists
who are ready to notice and appreciate all this. In any case, they don’t catch the eye. So you can easily pretend that they don’t exist at all!
Stroll around the sun-drenched Colosseum, bask on the stones of the ancient forum, explore the Vatican museums, and taste delicious pizza at the local-only tavern in Trastevere…. It’s just a leisurely stroll around Rome in the middle of February, when the snow is blowing at home…
Isn’t it fascinating just thinking about such a pastime?!
Moreover, the “cost of participation” is relatively low. That is, it is generally modest when compared with the cost of a trip at the “best time” to visit Rome.
Of course, we will also tell you about all this. But let’s start our story by exploring a more pressing and exciting question – what is it really like?
Weather in Rome in February
If you check the opinion of the average tourist guide, you may immediately abandon the idea of going. After all, “experts” are always happy to talk about things unknown to them. And they just enjoy savoring the difficulties that tourists will face if they decide to relax in Rome in February.
The following will be listed: extremely changeable weather, constant dank dampness, high probability of precipitation. As well as other unpleasant events.
If you put all the predictions together, it would seem that it is better not to leave the Roman hotel room at this time, just in case. Even if you have thoughtfully stocked up on rubber boots, a raincoat, an umbrella, and quite warm waterproof and windproof clothing.

The reality, however, turns out to be much better from year to year. So it’s not only not cold in Rome in February, but it’s even quite optimistic.
In Particular
the “Eternal City” sees bright sunlight and blue skies much more often than in January.
The temperature in Rome in February is often such that we can safely talk about the onset of spring.
Even at the beginning of the month, outdoor thermometers can show up to 14-16 °C. And in the future, after (possibly) diving to a level of 10-12 ° C, they will continue to insist on their own in the range from 15 to even 18 °C.
Making it clear in no uncertain terms that winter is over. And you can easily plan and put into practice the longest walks around the ancient city.
At the same time, they don’t care too much about bumping into other travelers who are fascinated by the weather, or about overly warm jackets.
Nights in Rome in February are, of course, noticeably colder. But not at all to the same extent as, say, in February Berlin or Stockholm.
On the edge of winter, the Roman air cools down to 3-5-7 degrees Celsius after sunset and rarely tends to settle near zero.
As a result, you are unlikely to be able to find snow anywhere. Even if it falls at this time of the year (a unique event), it melts in less than an hour or two.
Precipitation
There are many sunny or at least not rainy days! And the average monthly precipitation in Rome in February rarely exceeds 50 mm.
Winds also do not try to rip hats off passersby – gusts stronger than 5-7 m/s are rarely recorded.
Daylight hours are increasing from 10 hours at the beginning of the month to just over 11 hours closer to March
And nature, without waiting for any other signal, begins to blossom and blossom. At first, I was a little timid, but at the end of February I got more and more into the taste!
How to Dress

People who are prudent or just experienced, going to visit Rome in February, will certainly bring some warming things with them. Which are sure to be useful both during walks around the city and in the hotel room.
It is often very poorly unheated (you need to save money with such and such gas prices – any Italian will tell you that)!
It is worth remembering about the habit of saving resources in Italy. Many tourists do not take this fact into account when booking hotels and do not read the reviews of previous guests carefully enough.
It is quite natural that quilted jackets and warming tank tops will be useful for you when walking. And other clothes that weigh a little, but will allow you not to think about how much time you can be outside.
We recommend wearing waterproof shoes. Well, preferably with a sole that won’t slip on wet paving stones.
And don’t forget that the weather in Rome in February doesn’t match the above description every year. And it is during your visit that she seems to be able to do something “like that.”
It’s like a nasty rain turning into sleet… Ugh, three times, of course, but suddenly?
When do winter sales start in Rome and Italy?
Prices 2026
Despite the fact that February is clearly out of season, it is difficult to find a hotel that rents rooms for less than 100 € per night. Unless, of course, you want to live in comfort, and not constantly complain about the lack of amenities and poor level of service.
It’s difficult, but it’s possible – if you don’t look at the last moment. For example, we appreciated the neat White Flat Termini studios next to the famous train station and, of course, the metro station.
Its location is just excellent. The price tag is also very good (from €120 a night)! There is also a disadvantage, and it is significant: you need to book apartments right away, and the money will not be returned in case of a change of plans.
About €100 per night is charged for a room in the Colosseum Guest House. Located at a noticeable distance from the Colosseum (15-20 minutes on foot), but still finding guests without any problems.
Of course, the rooms are kept perfectly clean, and the San Giovanni metro station right in front of the house makes the process of moving around the metropolis an easy task. And this is important – there are so many opportunities in February that it’s just a pity to waste time.
Here you can find information about how to get on the Rome metro and how to navigate!
In February, prices for city tours are reduced to a minimum – for just €40 you can explore the main attractions of the Italian capital. And for €50-60, take part in a group (in February, this is just a name – you may be the only one who wants to) guided tour of the Vatican Museums.
Where to Visit in Rome in February

The places of tourist interest, or in other words, the main attractions of the “Eternal City”, are widely known. And in February, you should use every opportunity to visit as many truly worthwhile locations as possible.
After all, even inside the Roman Forum and on the Spanish Steps, which are extremely flooded with curious people in late spring and summer, there is a space for meditation and photo shoots at the finish of winter.
You will almost certainly spend a couple of hours inside St. Peter’s Cathedral and on its square, decorated with a colonnade and magnificent Bernini fountains. Visit the Vatican and perhaps explore the papal residence: the Apostolic Palace with the Sistine Chapel and the Borgia Apartments.
And also look at the “Eternal City” from the walls of Castel Sant’Angelo.
No matter what time of year you visit Rome, it’s worth going to the Pantheon and visiting Piazza Navone, a square captured in a lot of – including Hollywood – films. And climb the stairs, consecrated by the genius of Michelangelo, to the top of the Capitoline Hill, where the church of Santa Maria in Araceli with its beautiful interiors lives.
Definitely worth a visit is the Borghese Gallery, which is quite difficult to get to during the season due to the incredible influx of curious people. Equally, the garden surrounding it deserves at least a half-hour tour!
We recommend that you visit the authentic Trastevere district of Rome in February. Filled with beautiful houses and taverns where you can taste the most delicious dishes of true Italian cuisine.
