Venice in March

Gondolas on a raid - it's worth going on excursions to Venice in March!

Venice in March 2026 – is it worth going? Weather and reviews, air temperature, how to dress, prices in hotels and on excursions. What to see in Venice in March, where to go and what to do, where to go in Veneto and Italy – tells Eurotraveler.

In theory, March is the month that marks the beginning of spring. The most energetic and encouraging time of the year!

When nature wakes up after winter, slowly at first, and then faster and faster. Along the way, they charge everything around them – people are no exception – with energy and positive expectations.

In Northern and Central Europe, however, this process will not start on March 1. There is nothing to say about Russia – there is snow there in April and May!

Is it any wonder that citizens who can afford it are doing their best to speed up the arrival of a “real” spring? Going, if not to completely southern, that is, tropical lands, then at least to a place where there is no need to get too warm when leaving home?!

In March, Venice is definitely one of these places: not too cold and already clearly welcoming the arrival of the warmer season.

And, most importantly, the place is not excessively expensive. If you take the trouble to compare prices in Venetian hotels in March and, say, in May-June, you will fully agree with this.

There will also be incomparably fewer tourists. As for the weather, in March it will allow you to see everything you want in Venice. Without standing in long lines and walking in a crowd!

You can also broaden your horizons if you venture from Venice to Rome, Milan, Florence. After visiting interesting places in the Veneto region or even traveling around Italy.

Having reached the cities, where sometimes there is simply no strength to get to in the hot summer!

Venice Weather in March

Rarely disappoints travelers who expect to see and visit the maximum number of interesting places of the “Most Serene”. Especially those of them who understand that the beginning of spring at this latitude is not equal to the beginning of summer.

And they don’t expect to walk around in light shirts and sleeveless sundresses!

One way or another, but at the beginning of March it is no longer cold in Venice – during daytime hours the air temperature regularly stays in the range of 10-13 °C. Although walking in the evenings you will feel that winter is not gone yet and is somewhere nearby.

Because after sunset, the atmosphere quickly cools down to 3-5-7 degrees Celsius.

In the second decade of the month, you need to wait for a change in weather conditions (but wait that way). Because traditionally, the weather forecast in mid-March promises Venice something around 12-14 °C.

At best, up to 15-17 with a plus sign!

However, this reality still provokes intense sightseeing activity. After all, who wouldn’t want to take a tour of such a beautiful city without fear of catching a cold or overheating?!

Farther… it will only get better-or at least not worse. Therefore, you can not only believe, but also hope that at the end of March in Venice it will get significantly warmer (in other years the air temperature rises to 20 °C).

Some days you will feel that the sun is not just warming, but even baking!

Will Venice be as warm during your visit in March 2026? With a high degree of probability, yes!

Since the archival meteorological statistics of recent years indicate that closer to April, the air temperature in the “City of Canals” tends to settle in the range above +18 °C.

Precipitation

Some travel guides gloomily predict that in March you will find incredible dampness and constant rains in Venice. In fact, this is not the case – statistically, the first month of spring in the “City on the Water” is inferior in terms of precipitation not only to February, but even to April.

We are not talking about May, the rainiest month in Venice!

Yes, there are not too many sunny days, but this is a common thing for the “Serene One”. The main thing is that the average monthly precipitation does not exceed 70-80 mm.

And the number of pronounced rainy days in March is rarely more than 7-8 .

Humidity, of course, will be high throughout the month – it ranges from 75-95%. So in general, of course, you should dress warmer.

And, probably, take a (multicolored) umbrella with you on a trip: both to cheer up on a cloudy day, and for more practical purposes.

Length of the Day

On March 1, the sun rises over Venice at 6.50 a.m. and sets below the horizon at almost 6 p.m. A month later, it does the same thing 1 hour earlier and 40 minutes later.

Daylight hours thus vary between 11 a.m. and 12:40 p.m. That is, it is quite enough for you to have time in 3-4 days to see all the interesting places of Venice both from the outside (for example, from aboard the vaporetto) and inside.

How to Dress

A traveler who is preparing for a trip in detail will probably wonder how to dress in Venice in March. Although, in principle, it’s not hard to guess!

They use multi-layered, but still light clothing. And shoes that will keep your feet from getting wet if you decide to take a walk in the rain.

Puddles in St. Mark's Square - heavy rains in Venice and in spring

Well, or do it right after it – puddles in the “City on the water” do not tend to disappear immediately.

A variety of coats and raincoats, jackets and cardigans are in demand. In short, everything that will not hang like a stone on tourists’ shoulders during long hikes along the “Lightest”. But at the same time, it will not allow to overcool.

We recognize raincoats as an unnecessary item of clothing. Although fans of high-quality photographs may object to us, they unload their hands with the help of such garments.

Prices 2026

Hotels and apartments in Venice are quite expensive at any time of the year. So for those who plan to save money, it is better to settle in Mestre.

From which the actual “City on the water” can be reached by public transport in 15 minutes.

In Mestre, we recommend an inexpensive (from 60-70 € for two people per night), but very advantageously located Hotel Delle Rose. It is convenient to get to both Marco Polo Airport and Venice itself (tram line T1).

There is also a supermarket nearby. So if you wish, you can buy your own food for cooking.

The Staycity Aparthotels Venice Mestre, located in pleasant proximity to the bus stop and train station of the city, is also praised in the reviews. Accommodation also costs about 70 €. And this is again very cheap compared to the prices in March in hotels in Venice itself.

For example, in the Cannaregio area, which is popular among tourists. Where a couple of travelers will have to pay around 150 € per day for a day’s stay in early spring.

If you still insist, then here’s a tried-and-tested option for you – Alberghiera Venezia. Which is a spacious apartment very close to Santa Lucia train station.

There is a supermarket and several authentic restaurants nearby, and the city center can be reached on foot or by vaporetto in ~20 minutes.

As for guided city tours, they can be both expensive (about €150-200 for the whole company) and not very expensive – you can participate for €30-40.

What to See

Obviously, you won’t get to the famous winter sales in Italy at the beginning of spring, except for their official closing. But it’s not a big deal – in Venice you can buy a lot of gifts, souvenirs and just wonderful things to decorate yourself and your home.

Again, you’re not going shopping, are you?! And behind the romantic atmosphere, amazing sunrises, and the opportunity to see incredible architectural beauty.

By the way, about her! What a tourist needs to see in Venice first of all, in March or any other month, is listed in our detailed material. Read it if you don’t want to waste time developing a route around the “Canal City”.

There are a lot of interesting things nearby. And not only in the Veneto region: in Verona and Vicenza, Padua, Treviso, but also in the neighboring regions of Italy.

After all, from Venice you can easily get to Lake Garda or go to Milan in 1-2 days. It will take quite a bit of time to travel to Ferrara, in the middle of which stands the formidable and beautiful castle of the Dukes of Este.
